[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-12-18 Summary: Masterful writing ... If an ordinary writer had tackled some of the stories in this volume, they might have bored readers to tears. But Mitchell is a master and his command of language is entrancing. Many of his characters are unforgettable and this book makes you thankful that someone saw the value and the human interest in these characters who most might cast aside as eccentric messes. Mitchell likes people, he finds them endlessly fascinating, and that oozes from every page. Up in the Old Hotel is one book I keep in my bookcase and will ...more

[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-08 Summary: A beautiful piece of work ... The nonfictional pieces in this collection are classics (the fiction is less impressive). What makes these pieces stand out from all the other New Yorker/Sunday Times pieces that I've read is the dignity with which Mitchell depicted the people he portrayed. It's very moving. ...more
Editorial Reviews — [1] ... Product Description | Mitchell explored a New York City that has now vanished in his four books and his classic reportage for The New Yorker. Mitchell's eccentrics live again in this omnibus volume that contains all of his books and several previously uncollected stories....more
[2] ... Review | Journalist Joseph Mitchell, whose death in in May 1996 at the age of 87 merited a half-page obituary in the New York Times, pioneered a style of journalism while crafting brilliant magazine pieces for the New Yorker from the 1930s to the early 1960s. Up in the Old Hotel, a collection of his best reporting, is a 700-page joy to read. Mitchell lovingly chronicled the lives of odd New York characters. In the pages of Up In the Old Hotel, the reader passes through places such as McSorley's Old Ale House...more

Cactus Hotel (Big Book)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-05-31 Summary: Cactus Hotel ... I bought this book as an incentive for my grandson to read. He loved it and gave me a play-by-play of the book over the phone. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-08-30 Summary: Wonderful ... Yup, this is a truly wonderful book. It is thrilling to read that the cactus is only 4 inches tall at 10 years and as heavy as 5 cars at 150. My 8 year-old son was fascinated by this book and so am I. After reading it, he asked me if there are any more like it by the author. I'm going to see if I can find out. It is too bad there aren't more books like this one for children. The illustrator Megan Lloyd has produced beautiful artwork, but she is not as good as William Low (Old Penn Station). He is our favorite children's ...more

[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-16 Summary: Fun, easy read and a very good resource ... I have a small, family-run hotel, so many of the things he talks about (the huge mega resorts on private islands) don't directly apply to me. Eventually we DO want to grow to a larger hotel, and the tips he has to offer will certainly be useful. He talks about considerations like which way rooms face (east/west, etc), and how to get guests to forgive construction mess and when not to push their buttons. It is obvious that the author has traveled extensively, and has taken note of everything he thinks would be helpful. ...more

Sammy was just killing time when she looked across the avenue with the binoculars. Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-01-27 Summary: absolutely, uniquely, lovely......(in a weird way)!! ... Someone already reviewed this as one of the best novels of the last 20 years. I concur and say of the last 50 years. Stunning novel. And there are very few of those. To try to review its brilliance is to give things away that are better left unsaid. Just read this, if you aren't of the faint of heart! And if you have a psychological and philosophical curiosity about humanity you'll be rewarded. Oh, and if you happen to foresee the ending of this one coming, I strongly suggest you start playing the lottery. Mindblowing........ ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-01-27 Summary: The white Hotel-Timeless ... D. M. Thomas The White Hotel The White Hotel is a demanding, scholarly novel, full of poetry and surprises. It is beautifully written as an allegory for the human condition, the condition of love and hate, life and death. Its structure is tight. Each section has its own style and introduces new characters and new themes. It is as if D M Thomas has delved into the mind of Freud himself and imagined Freud in context, in the Vienna of the early twentieth century up to the time of the Second World War and the horrors ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-07-25 Summary: Disturbing and Fantastic ... Thomas spends most of the book geeting you intimately involved with the heroine's life and mind. [2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-09-18 Summary: every thing I could ever want to know about Jeff M. ... What an incredibly in-depth look at the fantastic album of the same name. Chock with flurries of knowledge about the brains and the beauty of N.M.H. plus the surrounding players and friends present in the time of the Elephant 6 Collective. In truth, I stopped reading this little flower in the hope of savoring it, making the pages spread out longer. Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Of all the recordings to emerge from the Athens-via-Denver collective called Elephant 6, Neutral Milk Hotel’s second album is the one that has worked its way under the most skins. Magnet magazine named it the best album of the 1990s, and Creative Loafing recently devoted a cover story to one fan’s quest to understand why band leader Jeff Mangum dropped out of sight soon after Aeroplane’s release. The record sells steadily to an audience that finds it through word of mouth. Weird,...more

[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-06-10 Summary: Buyer Beware: Look for the original version if you can find it. ... I must have read and reread this book 500 times as a child. I brought this back with me to the Netherlands after my father died, and on a whim picked it up to reread again now. (Which I how I discovered that I had actually inadvertently stolen my sister's copy-- sorry Sis!) Since there is a recent film about the book, it seemed timely to read.
